Trump Questions Durability of Potential Iran Agreement
During an interview with Fox Business, when asked whether a renewed deal with Iran “would ever really stick,” Trump responded, "I don't know. I know one thing, they want to make a deal."
He continued by noting, "They wouldn't talk to anybody else, but they're talking to me. But, you know, it's a good question. A lot of people say no, and I would say that I'd rather make a deal. It's got to be a good deal, no nuclear weapons, no missiles, no this, no that, all the different things that you want," underscoring that any agreement must eliminate nuclear arms, missile development, and other concerning activities.
Trump also pointed to past mistrust, stating, "But some people worry that they've been very dishonest with us over the years, right? Very dishonest. Obama, Obama and Biden, what they did in terms of creating a monster with Iran was terrible. That Iran nuclear deal was one of the dumbest deals I've ever seen," criticizing previous administrations’ handling of Tehran.
Meanwhile, Iran and the United States are gearing up for another phase of nuclear discussions after an initial round was held in Oman on Friday. Those talks resumed following an almost eight-month pause that came after Trump ordered strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear sites.
Strains have intensified between Washington and Tehran, driven by a US military reinforcement in the Persian Gulf and Trump’s repeated warnings of possible armed intervention.
