Trump Says No Breakthrough with Netanyahu, Pushes for Continued Iran Talks
In a message shared on his social media platform following approximately two and a half hours of discussions, Trump wrote: “There was nothing definitive reached other than I insisted that negotiations with Iran continue to see whether or not a deal can be consummated. If it can, I let the prime minister know that will be a preference.”
He added: “If it cannot, we will just have to see what the outcome will be. Last time Iran decided that they were better off not making a deal, and they were hit with Midnight Hammer — That did not work well for them. Hopefully this time they will be more reasonable and responsible,” the US president added.
The reference to “Midnight Hammer” pointed to airstrikes Trump authorized against Iranian nuclear sites in June of last year. Diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran resumed last Friday in Oman, marking the first direct negotiations since those strikes. Additional rounds of discussions are anticipated, although no specific timeline has been announced.
The recent meeting in Muscat effectively ended an eight-month pause in dialogue between the two countries. Trump characterized the initial round of renewed talks as “very good,” stating that Iranian representatives signaled a strong interest in securing a fresh agreement and indicating that both sides intend to reconvene next week.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials have accused the US and Israel of creating justifications for possible military action and efforts aimed at regime change. Tehran has warned that it would retaliate against any form of military strike, even if limited in scope. At the same time, Iran maintains that any agreement must include the removal of Western economic sanctions in return for constraints on its nuclear activities, according to statements.
