Iran Pursues Diplomacy with US While Preparing for Possible Conflict

(MENAFN) Iran remains committed to a diplomatic resolution with the United States while simultaneously preparing for the possibility of renewed hostilities, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview in Tehran on Tuesday.

“There is no solution but a diplomatic solution,” Araghchi emphasized, arguing that technological progress cannot be destroyed through bombings or military threats—actions that have fueled Tehran’s mistrust of Washington. “We still do not have full trust in Americans.

We were in the middle of negotiations last June when they decided to attack us. That was a very bad experience for us.”

He reaffirmed that Iran’s uranium enrichment program is strictly for peaceful purposes and based on the nation’s sovereign rights. Enrichment levels, Araghchi explained, depend on civilian requirements: power reactors use below 5% enriched uranium, while the Tehran Research Reactor, built by the US prior to 1979, operates with 20% enriched fuel to produce medical isotopes for cancer treatments. “The figures are not important… What matters is the peaceful nature of enrichment,” he said.

Araghchi also indicated that Iran is ready to provide guarantees that it will not pursue nuclear weapons, describing such assurances as “doable and achievable” if both sides act in good faith.

However, he firmly ruled out negotiations concerning Iran’s ballistic missile program or its regional alliances, insisting these issues are unrelated to the nuclear agenda. “We only negotiate about our nuclear program with the US,” he stated, calling other demands “absolutely” off the table.
