Dozens lose their lives as protests continue across Iran
Of those confirmed dead, 34 were protesters and two were associated with security forces.
Iranian authorities have not released an official death toll but stated that three security personnel were killed.
More than 60 protesters have been injured, and 2,076 people arrested during the unrest, which has now spread to 27 of the country’s 31 provinces.
On Tuesday evening, semi-official Iranian media reported that a policeman was shot dead by what they called "rioters" in Malekshahi, in the western province of Ilam, an area experiencing heavy protests and a violent security crackdown in recent days.
Earlier, security forces were filmed firing tear gas at demonstrators who chanted slogans against Iran’s clerical rulers at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar.
The protests began on 28 December, when shopkeepers took to the streets in response to a sharp decline in the Iranian rial against the US dollar. The currency has reached record lows over the past year, while inflation has surged to 40%, driven by sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program and long-term economic mismanagement and corruption.
University students soon joined the protests, helping them spread to other cities across the country.
