Iran’s Capital Shuts Down Schools Amid Cold Weather

(MENAFN) Iranian officials ordered sweeping shutdowns across Tehran on Wednesday as plummeting temperatures threaten the nation's strained energy infrastructure, a state media reported Tuesday.

The capital will see schools at all levels, universities, government agencies, and commercial hubs cease operations, according to directives from Tehran Province's task force for optimized energy consumption management, the outlet confirmed.

Emergency facilities—including medical centers and rescue operations—will remain operational, while banks will maintain skeleton staffing through select branch locations, the report noted.

Weather forecasts predict evening temperatures will plunge to minus 6 degrees Celsius, with daytime peaks barely reaching 2 degrees Celsius Wednesday, intensifying pressure on energy resources already stretched thin across the metropolitan area.

The unprecedented closure underscores mounting challenges facing Iran's power grid during winter months, forcing authorities to implement drastic conservation measures to prevent system-wide failures.
